Enviropress: About Us

About Us

After successfully completing several environmental engineering projects in the private sector, both as a contractor and an employee in industry, as well as serving as a technical advisor in international cooperation initiatives, I launched Enviropress in 2019. Enviropress is a news agency, a start-up dedicated to Environmental Information and Broadcasting Services, with a focus on environmental and climate change data. Our emphasis is on local data, ensuring that our reporting remains relevant and actionable for the communities we serve.

I noticed that many highly qualified professionals in various technical and social fields possess valuable knowledge that could contribute to environmental protection. However, they often lack the opportunity to apply their expertise due to the absence of commercial opportunities or contracts. This creates a vicious cycle: no contracts, no application of knowledge, and consequently, little to no environmental protection—particularly in developing countries. In this context, corruption becomes a critical factor to consider, along with the safety of journalists who report on these issues.

I thought, what if we research and analyse environmental problems and communicate proposals to solve them? The idea is that a reader might have knowledge to solve a problem that we publish in a newspaper or magazine, then they can raise their hand and set up projects to collaboratively solve the problem that caught their attention. I could spend eight hours a day, five days a week, designing a single wastewater treatment plant. Or, I could use that time to analyze all the treatment plants in a city, fact-check their performance, identify vulnerabilities, and then publish this information. This way, multiple engineers could read it, adjust their operational parameters, and identify opportunities for improvement. I've concluded that this second approach is far more impactful and necessary.

This led me to learn about environmental communication models and techniques, as well as constructive and solutions journalism, and to develop an information ecosystem where we communicate environmental news and data through different platforms: newspaper, magazines, podcasts, and also through other carefully planned activities. As an engineer, I see environmental journalism as a powerful tool for driving action to protect the environment.

Enviropress is an emerging, independent and bootstraped media company. This means that, at the moment I finance all activities with my work as an environmental engineer. I hope that I will soon be able to make this project financially viable... working on it! As an independent media outlet, creativity and discipline are essential to achieving profitability for the project. While I don’t rule out accepting advertising from companies in our publications, I am actively seeking alternative revenue streams, as much of today's advertising is concentrated on social media. Additionally, I believe it is not viable to rely on funding that could compromise our editorial objectivity. Maintaining our independence remains a priority, and finding sustainable financial solutions is key to preserving this integrity.

In this development process, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of independence. Many media outlets are tied to political movements, religious or academic institutions, or rely on government funding. I believe that maintaining the editorial independence of Enviropress is essential, as it allows us to critically engage with the complex, multivariable information surrounding sustainable development and climate change, free from external biases or interests that do not align with environmental protection. This independence enables us to hold policymakers and politicians accountable.

In conclusion, I hope you find our content both engaging and, most importantly, useful in supporting local environmental protection efforts in the regions where we operate. My approach has been to create outlets tailored to different niches that require attention, such as EHS (Environmental Health and Safety), Water Intelligence, and Environmental Education, with a focus primarily on Mexico. All of these initiatives are currently in a test or beta phase, as I assess their effectiveness. The goal is to identify a sustainable model that will enable us to expand and accelerate our informative efforts.

Communication and Information Response to Natural Disasters
Disaster Comms.

Communication during WASH-emergencies and natural disasters - earthquakes, fires, floods, tornadoes, etc. - is a critical process for the well-being of the affected population, as it allows the various cooperating agencies to coordinate effective procedures for their protection. In order to carry out these operations, it is essential to have highly trained and experienced personnel who can contribute effectively to the collective effort. At Enviropress, we have a unit of reporters specialised in covering natural disasters, ready to activate their information protocols immediately if necessary.
